Exciting activities for Family Picnics

Picnic activities and games can bring your family closer, open up the route to better communication and help family members bond.

Depending on the size and suitability of your picnic location, there are suitable games for every age:

 1. The 3-Legged Pair Race

A pair of trousers or pantyhose is used to play the game – instead of tying one’s leg to the leg of their partner, both partners wear one leg of the pantyhose or trousers and race!

The race is easier to run when partners are of the same height.

Each partner should support the other by putting their arm around the other’s shoulders. Have your pantyhose/trousers ready before the day of the picnic.  Ideal for ages 6 years and up.

2. The Humpty Dumpty Egg Race

The egg race is so exciting and thrilling that the whole family will want to be a part of it. The game is simple. Race from point A to point B, holding a whole raw egg with a spoon!

3. Pass the Musical Hats

This is a version of musical chairs that’s just as fun. Pass around a fun variation of hats while the music plays. When the music stops, you have to be wearing a hat or you are out!

Provide a variety of funny hats and have the family sit around in a circle.

There should be one less hat than the number of family members playing. Provide an assortment of music that everyone in the family likes.  One person should be designated to stop the music.

Family members pass the hat around as the music plays. When the music stops, everyone grabs a hat!

The player without a hat when the music stops is out of the game. To begin again, remove one hat. Keep playing until one player is left.

4. A Family Photoshoot

An activity as simple as capturing the happiest moments of your family picnic can be great for the family.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate; simply have a good phone camera on hand and initiate a pose from your loved ones every now again.

This will not only give you happy memories to look back on but will also make everyone feel special and confident during the picnic. Ideal for all ages.

5. Colourful Puzzles

Looking for a hands-on game that is more relaxing than competitive? Try colourful puzzles.

Be sure to engage everyone in conversation as you all try to piece the puzzles together and celebrate each member when they find a fitting piece!

Ideal for ages 4 and up.

6. Soccer

What better to way add some excitement to your family picnic than with a little game of soccer? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Just remember to pack the ball and everyone’s running shoes! Ideal for ages 6 and up.

7. Tug of War

All you need is a strong rope and a team of 2 or more on each side of the rope. Both teams tug the rope with the aim of pulling the other to their side.

The team that successfully pulls the other wins! Ideal for ages 6 and up.

8. Wheelbarrow Race

Happy kids having fun with their parents during wheelbarrow race in nature.

To play this game, one player puts their hands on the floor, while the other player holds their feet up as they walk or race along.

For children’s safety, it’s important to make sure that the player holding the legs up does not go faster than the player with their hands on the ground.

Ideal for ages 8 and up.

9. Hide and Seek

If your family picnic is in a location with little but safe hiding spots, this is a great game that families of all ages can play.

One family member covers their eyes and counts to 10 while the others hide. The family member proceeds to look for each person until everyone is found.

Every one who is found loses.  Ideal for ages 4 and up.

10. Storytelling

Having each member tell a story is an engaging way for them to communicate. An adult can narrate a story while the children or (the rest of the family) can help complete the story.

The kids can also be asked to share the stories from their favourite books, while the adults ask questions about it.

11. Freeze Tag

To play this game, the family nominates a member to be ‘It’. The player who is ‘it’ can make other players stop in their tracks by touching them, so that they ‘freeze’.

What makes this game so exciting is that everyone avoids the player who is ‘it’, while the player chases everyone.

The player who is “it” wins by freezing all other players.
