Going gray is natural, and it is a normal part of aging, but some people experience premature graying of hair.
It is good you know the causes of premature graying of hair so that you can avoid them.
Here are some causes of premature graying of hair:
1. Deficiency in Vitamin B12
Many adults with gray hair have a vitamin B12 deficiency. Aim to get 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 per day in supplements or in shots.

Smoking causes chemical changes to your body that damage the melanin-producing cells in your hair, which make your hair grow gray at an early age.
3. Constant, long-term stress may contribute to gray hair
High stress levels may damage the chemicals that produce melanin in your hair. Gray hair occur due to the loss of melanin.
- If you’re feeling stressed and you’d like to lower your stress levels, try exercising daily, practicing meditation, and getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
- Some studies suggest that oxidative stress, or breathing in toxins like pollutants and heavy metals over a long period of time, may also contribute to gray hair
Certain autoimmune diseases can cause younger people to develop gray hairs. Examples of autoimmune diseases are alopecia and vitiligo.
If you start developing gray hairs at an early age, it is most likely that your parents also experienced it early.
