A day before the wedding, the NBA star Marcus Smart posted on his Instagram: ‘Wow, I never thought I’d see the day. From a boy to a man, starting this new chapter with you is a blessing and more!

‘Thank you for fighting with me. When times get hard we never waver. Here’s to Mr and Mrs Smart… I love you.’

When Smart returns, his focus will inevitably turn to the upcoming NBA season.

Smart was traded from the Celtics to the Memphis Grizzlies in July and when he joined, vowed to become a leader in the locker room.

‘That’s who I am,’ Smart said to Chris Vernon in an interview. “That’s who I was with Boston.

‘That’s one of the reasons why my name and my reputation proceeds me so much, because I am that guy.

‘I’m also not the guy to just talk about it, I’m going to go out there and show you my actions as well.’

The preseason campaign for the Grizzlies starts on October 8 with a warmup game against the Indiana Pacers.

The NBA season itself starts for Marcus Smart and his new team on October 25, at home to the New Orleans Pelicans.
