Not even two decades ago, this action would have spelt the death of her career in capital letters.

However, now, with the idea of coloured hair becoming more widely accepted in the African community, the horizons for creative expression with hair have opened wide.
The most popular colours for the blackest women are ginger, red and blonde. This is because they flatter most melanised skin tones. Here are five factors to consider before deciding to dye your hair:
Hair type and texture
Consider your hair’s type and texture, such as whether it is relaxed, natural, or transitioning. Different hair types may have different sensitivities to chemicals, so choose a dye that is suitable for your specific hair type.
Hair health
Ensure that your hair is in good condition before putting the dye. If your hair is damaged or weakened, it may be more prone to breakage or further damage from the dyeing process. Deep condition and strengthen your hair in the weeks leading up to dyeing.
Choose the right colour
Consider your skin tone, personal style, and lifestyle when selecting a hair colour. Some shades may complement your complexion better than others. For a subtler change, you can opt for a shade closer to your natural colour, or for a bolder look, try vibrant or contrasting shades.
Test for allergies
Perform a patch test (that is; apply it on your arm or back of your hand and wait for twelve hours) before applying the hair dye to your entire head. This helps identify any potential allergic reactions or sensitivities to the product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for conducting the patch test.
Maintenance and aftercare
Understand that coloured hair requires additional care to maintain its vibrancy and health. Use colour-safe shampoos and conditioners, avoid excessive heat styling, and protect your hair from the sun’s UV rays. Regular touch-ups may also be necessary to maintain the desired colour.
