Infertility is when a couple cannot conceive despite having regular unprotected sex. A couple will only be diagnosed as being infertile if they have not managed to have a baby after one year of trying.
Not being able to conceive doesn’t always mean couples are unable to have a child ever. With treatments couples who get help can eventually have a child, either on their own or with medical help.
Below is reasons why couples can’t conceive.
Not Ovulating: Human conception requires an egg and sperm. If you’re not ovulating, you won’t be able to get pregnant.

Age-Related Infertility: Women after age 35, and for men after age 40, it can take longer to get pregnant. Age impacts egg quality as well as quantity.
Blocked Fallopian Tubes: If your fallopian tubes have become blocked or scarred through these incidences, then surgery might be required to break up the scar tissue in the fallopian tubes, making it easier for eggs to pass through.
Underlying Medical Problems: Underlying medical conditions can lead to infertility in both men and women. A thyroid imbalance or undiagnosed diabetes can lead to infertility and also depression.
Issues with male fertility: There could be issues with a lacking or inadequate sperm count, reduced sperm motility or high abnormal forms of sperm.

Smoking: When trying for a baby, it’s important to minimise harmful substances in the body. It can reduce sperm quantity and quality.
Being overweight:Â Being overweight can cause various issues such as, hormonal imbalance, issues with ovulation and problems with menstruation. The closer a person is to a healthy weight, the better their chances are at conceiving.
