Bride Who Wore Pink And Was Told Marriage Wouldn’t Last Celebrates Ruby Wedding Anniversary

John and Tracey Robbins

John and Tracey Robbins celebrate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary on August 13, 40 years after their friends and family told them it wouldn’t last.

They were just 17 years old when they tied the knot, but now, they are celebrating their Ruby wedding anniversary.

When they met, the couple were living in the same street, next door but one to each other, with Tracey’s grandparents living in between them. They fell in love and had a baby daughter.

Their wedding made the headlines of the local paper – they were the last couple to be married at St John’s and St Stephen’s Church in New Clee, Grimsby. Tracey’s full pink bridal gown and veil also caught people’s attention.

Tracey said: “As I had a one-year-old daughter my parents wouldn’t let me get married in white for obvious reasons. But I absolutely loved my dress which was fashioned from a bridesmaid dress by a local wedding shop, it was a head turner on the day as no one knew it was all pink only my mum who is longer with us.”

The couple, both aged 57 and living in Immingham, are still going strong today and don’t regret a thing about being married young. John, a labourer on Grimsby docks, and Tracey, a domestic, now have five children Kelly, 41, Shayne, 39, Jason, 36, Stacie, 33, Dean, 29, and 13 grandchildren – the oldest aged 22 and the youngest just one year old.

Tracey said: “Everyone told us we were too young to get married and it wouldn’t last, but here we are 40 years later and still in love. We are celebrating this year with a big party with all of our family and friends.

“All I can say for words of wisdom is to keep on loving each other and never give up. Always be truthful to one another, give and take, and be best friends and you can’t go wrong.”
