Queen Elizabeth Marks First Wedding Anniversary Without Prince Phillip

The Queen marks her first wedding anniversary without husband Prince Phillip, 74 years after they tied the knot.

Queen Elizabeth II was just 21 years old when she married Phillip Mountbatten, then 26, at Westminster Abbey.

The then Princess Elizabeth first laid eyes on Philip when she was 13 years old and the Prince was 18 – about to embark on a career in the Royal Navy.

While on a trip to Dartmouth’s Britannia Royal Naval College with her parents and sister, Princess Margaret, the future monarch was struck by Philip’s “Viking” good looks.

The future Queen’s teenage crush developed into a friendship between the pair, and over the years they exchanged letters.

In 1947, when Princess Elizabeth had turned 21, her engagement to Philip Mountbatten was formally announced.
