5 Factors That Causes Menstrual Pain

Menstruation is the monthly flow of blood from the vagina of a woman. It is also a sign that pregnancy has not occurred. Some women undergo menstrual pain which is caused by different factors.

During menstruation, the uterus contracts to help dispel its lining. Hormone-like substances (prostaglandins) involved in inflammation and pain trigger the uterine muscle contractions.

Here, we will list out some of the factors that lead to painful menstruation. They include:

    Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

This infection of the female reproductive organs is usually caused by sexually transmitted bacteria.

    Cervical Stenosis

For some women, the opening of the cervical organ is small, which may impede menstrual flow, causing a painful increase of pressure within the uterus.

    Uterine fibroids

These are noncancerous growths in the wall of the uterus and can cause pain during menstrual flow.

    Endometriosis

Tissue that acts similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, most commonly on fallopian tubes, ovaries or the tissue lining the pelvis.
