Why Babies Cry For Different Reasons And How To Understand Each Sound

Babies cry in different ways. Since they do not know how to talk yet, they express themselves through sounds and crying is one of them. For the first three month of their birth, they communicate mostly by crying. Babies cry for different reasons – when they are hungry, need attention, bored, tired or feeling sleepy.

How to understand the different cries of babies:

When your baby is hungry, they begin to cry slowly and quietly and if they are not being attended to, they increase the sound. Unless you are sure that you just fed your baby, you should make sure you attend to them by feeding them.

When your baby is in pain, they begin to cry suddenly. The pain will immediately trigger the cry and it becomes sudden. This sound indicates urgency. Once you hear this sound, you should make sure you attend to them immediately.

When your baby is feeling uncomfortably, they begin the fussy cry. The sound may start and stop or may go up and down. If you leave them unattended to, they may increase the sound. Fussy crying may mean that they are uncomfortable or they just want to be held.

Some cries may indicate that something is seriously wrong. An abnormal cry may be very high-pitched, up to three times as high as your baby’s normal cry.

It may also be unusually low-pitched. A high or low cry that persists could mean a severe illness. If your infant is crying in a way that sounds strange to you, call a paediatrician.
